It's Feeder Season!

It's one of the best things about fall and winter.
With the cold weather and bare trees,
your bird feeders become hubs of activity.

Ever notice how some birds sit at your
feeder and munch, while others flit back and
forth on an endless quest to ferry seeds away?
Chances are this is for one of three purposes:
fear of hawks, lack of the proper "tools,"
or planning for the lean winter ahead.

Small birds like the ones that visit feeders
are constantly obsessed with finding safety from predators.
If food is at a risky, exposed location,
such as a feeder, birds must remain vigilant,
continuously scanning their surroundings for threats.

Birds such as Finches and Grosbeaks,
with their seed crushing bills,
can eat and scan simultaneously,
looking down only briefly to grab another seed.

Birds that must look down and hammer at seeds
prefer to fly to a safer place with their food
instead of working on it in an area exposed to predators.
This is why you often see Chickadees flitting
back and forth from feeder to trees or shrubs
and back with their seeds.

Some foods - such as shelled seeds and nuts - might even require specialized methods to crack them open
Blue Jays manage to wedge the seed between their toes.
Looking down to work on a seed is still risky
and you will often see Blue Jays quickly
scan their surroundings before hammering away.

But the most fascinating reason is “caching”- the behavior
of storing up food supplies in a safe place for later.
This is one of the main reasons you see birds fly off
with their food instead of eating at the feeder.
Lots of birds - and even mammals such as squirrels,
beavers, and bears - cache food for consumption
 later on, during lean times.

Caching isn’t as easy as it might appear.
A bird must fly back and forth,
one or a few seeds at a time, over hundreds of trips.
They also have to make sure the caches aren’t stolen and remember where all the food is hidden
when hunger strikes.
Most common North American feeder birds
can have anywhere from hundreds to thousands of
separate caches scattered around their home ranges.

Many caching species have keen spatial memory
and can remember precise locations using
visual cues like distance and direction from landmarks
 such as rocks and vegetation.
In fact, birds such as Black-capped Chickadees increase
the size of the brain (in the area associated with memory)
as caching ramps up in the fall.
I'm not so sure that Scrub Jays have that capability.
I have almonds sprout up under my larger trees,
probably from the orchards a few blocks away!

Ravens and Scrub Jays also cache as
 inconspicuously as possible
Ravens cache food behind structures so that
other Ravens cannot see what they’re doing,
and Scrub Jays prefer shady locations,
making it harder for other Scrub Jays
to see what’s going on.
Hence under our trees.

Now if they could only remember where they put them!

A Few Great Tips for Winter!

Winter has finally hit in our neck of the woods and we've been having some pretty good frost in the mornings. Here's a tip I read, use breathable crib sheets over your delicate plants.
The elastic sure helps it stay on.

This is something I need to do!
Use foam gaskets to seal electrical boxes.
According to energy experts, electrical boxes that hold switches
or outlets are major sources of heat loss.
Foam gaskets (reasonably priced at home centers) won’t completely seal the boxes, but they’ll help.
They’re quick to install— just take off the cover plate,
stick the gasket over the box, then put the plate back on.
Easy peasy!
Now this is clever!
Use bubble wrap for window insulation!
Cut the bubble wrap to fit the window pane with scissors.
Spray a film of water on the window using a spray bottle.
Apply the bubble wrap while the window is still wet and press it into place.  The bubble side goes toward the glass.
To remove the bubble wrap, just pull it off starting from a corner.  You can save it and use it for several years.  It does not leave a mess or stains on the window glass.
Another easy peasy!

During the Winter the home can smell a little musty from being all closed up, I thought this was great hack too! And easy!
With the Holidays comes seeing friends and relatives you may haven't seen since last year. That also means sharing of the viruses, colds, flus, and any bugs to be had. We all know stress weakens our immune system and although we all look forward to seeing each other it can be stressful. So here's a few tips to help out with any bumps, bruises, headaches, bugs, etc. that may come your way.

1 tablespoon honey
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
Combine the honey and cinnamon in a bowl.
Eat it plain or mixed into tea or
applesauce 4 times a day until cold symptoms are alleviated.
Only for children over 1 year of age.

Hillman Wood Screws #8 x 1.5" , Flat Phillips, Zinc Plated, Steel, Pack of 11 - Review

''The Hillman zinc plated, steel, wood screws are designed to tackle wood applications; these wood screws are used to join two pieces of wood. The smooth shank design allows the screw to pull two pieces of wood together for a reliable join/connection, while preventing the wood from pulling or splitting. The flat head design makes for a flush placement against the surface while the tapered threads make for a strong hold. The wood screws feature a zinc finish for some corrosion protection while the steel material offers durability.''

Hillman Wood Screws worked wonderfully when fixing my side gate. They drove in easily and screwed all the way pulling the loose boards and lock snugly.. My bit fit perfectly into the Phillips head for not having to worry about striping the head. These screws are built strong.

Bolstered walls provide maximum comfort and support while the baffled liner construction keeps the recycled fiber fill evenly distributed and in place. Faux Vintage Leather Binder

I needed someplace to keep all my research papers, so I bought a huge binder.
Everything was perfect except for the cover, stark white.
Well, that just won't do!

I decided I wanted it to look like old vintage leather.
Grabbed some supplies and went to work.

Here we go!

I started by striping the white tissue paper,

then scrunching it all up to get a nice wrinkly effect.

I tore the tissue paper into smaller pieces, which made then easier to adhere.

Working a section at a time, I covered the outside of the plastic covered binder
with a coat of Mod Podge and added pieces of the tissue paper. There's no right
or wrong way. You want it to look wrinkly so no worries about smoothing it out.

I applied another coat of Mod Podge over the tissue paper.

Here's what the front looks like when done.
I repeated the same process to the sides and back of the binder
allowing for drying time in between coats.

Once the entire outside was covered with tissue it was time to paint.
I gave it a coat of Burnt Umber craft paint because it's what I had on hand.

I wanted some dimension so I added a few drops of Black craft paint.

While the Burnt Umber was still wet I swirled in the black randomly

I kept swirling until I reached the effect I wanted.

Here's what the front looks like when done with the painting.

I repeated the same treatment to each of the outside sections,
allowing each to dry properly before moving on to the next section.

Once I was sure the outside was thoroughly dried, I started working on the inside.
I wanted the inside to look finished. It has 3 pockets on the inside front and back cover.
I didn't want to lose the ability of using those.

I brought the tissue paper and paint combo inside to frame the binders edges for a
framed look. Found an image I liked, printed it out and slid it into the top pocket.

Being able to see through the pockets gave me the advantage of cutting the
image where I needed to so I could apply the correct size to cover the top of the pockets.

After cutting the image (I used my craft knife), I removed each piece.
I adhered each image to the top of their correct pocket, making the pockets still useable
with a finished look.

After a thorough drying time I made sure the pockets worked as anticipated.
And they did.

I repeated the same process to the other side,
continued the theme down the inside of the "binding"
and added some small images to the narrow part of the "binding".

I happened to find a small bit of black trim and
decided to add along the inside bottom.
Thought it looked cute and I used that small piece of trim
I had been hanging onto forever!

Once the inside was completely dry I moved on to embellish the cover.
The fun begins!

I mixed some Mod Podge with a little bit of  brown craft paint.
I used this tinted Mod Podge to adhere cheesecloth to the outside cover.
I stretched the cheesecloth until it kind of looked like netting.

I let it reach beyond the edge of the binder and once it was dry,
I just trimmed it to fit with scissors.

I found a piece of black ribbon with gold stars and added it to the "binding".
A perfect fit, yay another remnant gone!
I took brads I found and cut off the prongs.
I adhered the tops along the ribbon to make them resemble
rivets or something to that effect.

I added some swirly die cuts to look like "hinges"
and a few images that I had to the front.

I added clay trim, that I painted black, and a piece of burlap
at the bottom, then topped with old keys.

It took me about a month to finish this -
a lot of the time was in the drying, and I only was able to
work on it when I had the time. Which was few and far between.

I'm sure it would go faster when a person had ample time to
work on it regularly.

Here is the finished product along with another I made.
