New CDC recommendations endorse using face masks when in public to help combat Covid-19. Many DIY designs are circulating that you can sew at home. Those needing something easier, or lacking a sewing machine, have used t-shirts, scarves, and bandanas — shown to be less effective than an N95-rated product, but still much more useful than nothing at all.
Here are 2 ways you can make a face mask with absolutely no sewing.
You can make a no sew cloth face mask with two elastic pony tail holders and a bandana, or any piece of cotton fabric and even rubber bands.
You'll need a bandana or other fabric
and 2 pony tail holders or elastic bands
Be sure your fabric is 100% cotton.
#1 Lay flat and fold each end to the middle
Flip over
Do the same thing again - bring each end to the middle
Get your pony tail holders
and slide one over each end,
about the 1/3 of the way in.
Fold each end over the pony tail holder toward the middle
Place one end into the other, pocketing one end
into the folds of the other.
You can adjust the top
and the bottom
to cover to cover your nose and mouth.
#2 Fold bandana in half
fold in half again
Slide a pony tail holder one over each end,
about the 1/3 of the way in.
Fold each end over the pony tail holder toward the middle
Place one end into the other
pocketing one end
into the folds of the other.
Slip the pony tail holders over your ears
adjust the bandana to cover your nose and mouth.
This is not a medical-grade mask by any means, but if you’re an asymptomatic carrier of Covid-19, it can help reduce the spread of the virus. An additional suggestion to add a paper towel or coffee filter to its interior may also increase its capabilities.
