smells heavenly ☺

Mimosa (I think)
These things pop up all over the yard
thanks to my neighbor who has a huge one.
We decided to let this one grow, but keep reigns on it.

sweet old fashioned single pink Hollyhocks
these reseed freely

I've been picking Tomatoes regularly

and the Figs are ripening like crazy

Need to find time to make some jam!

There's Mr Mocking Bird helping himself to some figs

We have an understanding...
He can have the ones way up high,
but the ones within my reach are mine ;)

Last year he tried renegotiating but I wouldn't budge!

XOXOXOXOXOX

OK I'm sending out the word here for HELP!!

Those of you who follow along know my Oldest
and his girlfriend have a
great Veggie Garden going.

Some of the seeds he has planted were from back
when my Dad has his huge one.
Dad saved seed and over the years the paper bags
he had them in aged and tore.
The seeds got all mixed up.

Some were identifiable, some weren't.
All got planted.
Believe it or not almost all of the 10+ year old seed grew!
Anyway~

There are some plants that we can't figure out what they are.
They don't bare any veg/fruit, per se.
Not sure if they were weeds seeds that got mixed in...there were a lot tho.
So I'm hoping someone can't help ID this plant...

It's about 3' tall
large heart shaped leaves

Here's a top portion of the plant
we broke off.
It has yellow bell shaped flowers.

With large seed pods?

that darken and get hard

with tiny black seeds inside

Can't see anything edible on these
and can't figure out what they were doing in with his veggies seeds.
Tried to ID it as a veggie and weed but no luck.
Hoping maybe you know what this mystery plant is.

Thanks!

UPDATE

Thanks to Larry and Dar for IDing the mystery plant.
It is Abutilon theophrasti, Velvetleaf Weed.
AKA China Jute, Buttonweed, Butterprint, Pie-maker or Indian Mallow.

'Velvetleaf has become an invasive species in agricultural regions of the eastern and midwestern United States. It is one of the most detrimental weeds to corn causing decreases of up to 34% of crop yield if not controlled and costing hundreds of millions of dollars per year in control and damage. Velvetleaf is an extremely competitive plant, so much so that it can steal nutrients and water away from crops.'

YIKES!!
Where's the Roundup!!??

  1. That looks like my cucumber plant. Maybe a different variety? The leaves look the same and it gets yellow flowers. The little cukes have the flowers on the ends of them. I don't get those pods though. Maybe this is a reseeding variety. Mine grows like a weed in the garden! Also the stems of it are prickly. The underside of the leaves too. If you look at my second to last post I have a pic of it on there. Love the chair! Didn't see the horse collar though. I have been looking out for that one!

  2. Hi Deb !, As for your plant ID...hum....., Looks like some kind of squash or pumpkin ?? Reason I say that, every fall after we dispose of the pumpkins , we cut them in quarters and put them behind the back fence. Either something comes and eats parts nof it or they breakdown. The following Spring we have plants / vines growing that look like that. They get yellow flowers, but nothing beyond that. I assume its what grows from the pumpkin seeds ..... Soooo , that's my 2 cents worth ..lol:)
Love your Lily of the Nile , it's Beautiful!! :)
    Have a Great weekend ~

  4. Wow, your garden is incredible, Deb! And very cool that your Dad's seeds did so well. I don't know what your mystery plant is - but I hope you'll post about it when you find out! :)

  5. Your flowers are gorgeous, loving the agapanthus and the chair full of charm. Your mystery plant looks like a Velvetleaf, also known as the Pie-maker because of the crimped edges on the seed head that resemble a piecrust edge. They are from the Mallow family and can grow as tall as 6 feet.
They are a native of India.
Love Your ladders and it's always crazy fun coming to your site.

  6. It's velvet weed... you don't want it going to seed I promise you. Seeds can stay viable in the soil for a very long time... check it out on the internet. I still get it in my gardens that were pasture 25 years ago! Hope this helps... Larry

  8. Aww,makes me wish I hadn't gotten rid of my old rattan chair, like yours... I love the old ladders, too. All of your flowers are lovely... It has been summer in Texas awhile now, I hope that isn't trumpet vine, ours has been pretty orange flowers, but it takes over everything, and some folks are allergic, like poison ivy. the birds are always getting my figs, too. 9. Heisann!

Thank you for visiting my blog. There is not much communication these days. Probably the reason whty is that many people are on holiday.
Then few ones warmer eaven more ;:OD)
I also guess the tree is from China... Have the feeling !
Nice to have old plants from the family in the garden.
I look forward to harvest the tomatoes in the greenhous. Now we are building steps of stones found near the coast, to make a new path from the upper garden to the greenhouse.
    Have a good time ;:OD)

  10. Your garden is gorgeous, and such nice pics to show it off! I do love the ladder...like you, I cherish things that are worn, ragged and repurposed. Some have dared to ask why I'm collecting junk, but I know it's really recycling at its finest! LOL.

Thanks for the lovely visit. I particularly enjoyed your furry helpers..I have a few of those myself!

  12. Deb, I had one of those "plants" in my garden and let it grow a little before I realized it must have been a weed. Glad I yanked that sucker out of there! You must have a beautiful garden by what I see in your pictures. Thanks, too, for stopping by my blog.
