Fertilizer Friday ~ 10/28/10

I'm joining Tootsie Time for

Well, here we are the last Friday of October,
there are slim pickens in the garden.

I did find my Rosemary in full bloom.

I love the soft blue color

and the little dainty flowers.

Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend!
♥♥♥

Here I am...Mouth Agape.....

I received an email notifying me of an Estate Sale
this weekend in Granite Bay near Sacramento.
It's a few hours away and too far to drive(for me anyway),
but thought I'd take a look at the pictures.
It said it was at an Arabian Ranch.
I thought that would be fun...

then I looked at the pictures.....

OMG!

This couple not only has traveled the world over
to decorate their "stately 7,500 sq. ft. French Chateau residence"
 but
"At it’s peak there were over 200 head,
and been the home to over 400 championship quality horses".

I watched the videos and
I swear he said some of the things came from the Vatican!

You must check out the link above,
their story is something you read about in a book.

Here are a few photos from the site.

This entrance is enough of a clue as to what's inside!

Can you see the vintage glass baby bottles
under the table in the sterilizing holder?!

vintage Christmas Ornaments!

If any of you live in that area be sure and check it out!
It would be so exciting just to walk through
and see all the treasure they have ♥♥

OOO Vera!

I'm joining these parties:
Nifty Thrifty Tuesdays @ Coastal Charm

Second Time Around @ A Picture is Worth 1,000 Words

Junkin Finds @ A La Carte

Vintage Thingie Thursday @ Coloradolady

I stopped at our local Salvation Army Thrift shop last week.
They have lots of goodies but I usually pass it up due to it's high prices.
They never have sales,
so it's usually the same things there week after week
with more & more added.
Anyway, I was in the mood so I pulled over.

I did manage to find a few reasonable items.

A vintage Vera towel .75
A cute coffee cup $1.50 (way to much but the picture was cute ;))
A small hurricane lamp chimney .50
a short canning jar in a metal holder 1.00

The Vera towel couldn't be more appropriate for the Season.
I found one on Etsy with the price tag of $30!
Yep, it made my day!

Fertilizer Friday ~ 10/22/10

Boy, did this week pass me by!
I was a little under the weather
so I think that had something to do with it.

But time marches on and here it is again
Fertilizer Friday over at Tootsie Time.

My Oldest and his Fiancée brought over the pumpkins they grew.
They live in the country and don't get any Trick or Treaters.

Look at the size of these babies!!
All are huge but the one on the left is Mega Huge!

Of course, Mama had to get in on the photo ;)

As I walked around the garden looking for anything in bloom,
I was surprised at what I found.
Oxalis under the pond bench is blooming.
When I was little we called this Sour Grass and used to pull a
stem off an chew on it! LOL

The Purple Potato is in full bloom.
This thing is so vigorous I cut it to the ground each year
and it comes back bigger and bigger

To my delight I found a few of my Lilacs blooming.

This one is from my Mother's Garden.
I love the white edges of the petals.

Miss Kim has buds ready to burst open.

Fresh Red Tomato Cake

To all of you who are waiting with baited breath it was.........

Kinda similar to Carrot Cake.
No you can't taste the tomatoes.

So here ya go ☺☺

Fresh Tomato Cake
from RecipeLand

1 cup brown sugar, dark
1/2 cup vegetable shortening
2 large eggs
3 cups flour, all-purpose
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups tomatoes,  ripe and peeled
1/2 cup nuts, chopped

Mix cream sugar and shortening.
Add eggs.

I didn't peel the tomatoes. Instead, I pureed them.
Didn't add raisins or dates.
Doubled the nuts.

A Few Great Finds...

Be sure to visit each of these ladies to see lots of great Treasure!
Coastal Charm

A Picture is Worth 1,000 Words

Coloradolady

After receiving an email from the Estate Sale List I'm on,
I was really excited to check this one out!
Just look at all that Treasure!

I had never been to a sale organized and I use that term loosely,
by this company. From the photos they looked like any other organized
sale....boy, was I wrong.

What should have taken us about 45 mins. took us 2 hrs.
I've never had so much trouble finding a place before.
My Garmin gave us wrong directions
(I need to break down and buy updated maps!)
The Directions I printed out from Google were wrong,
a different wrong from the Garmin.
Just when we were about to give up,
we got enough of a cell signal to get directions from the phones GPS.

They had no signs except for the one in front of the house!
Now this was way in the boonies, mind you,
no gas stations to ask directions from.
 Anyway, we made it.

Lots and lots of Treasure,
but the few items that actually had prices on them seemed high.
There was only 1 lady working it and she was at the checkout,
so in order to find out the price of something you had to take it to her and wait your turn.

I wasn't in too good of a mood from hunting for this place so didn't feel like lugging things back and forth to her.

It was a huge beautiful home though, with 4 acres of Almonds.
Hardwood floors throughout.
Large living room, family room, front room, dining room,
and I do mean large!
The kitchen was pretty good size too,
with large pantry and laundry room.
I was too busy looking through all the goodies I forgot to pay attention to how many bedrooms it had :~
Also a large cement patio and garden.
It had a shop about 3 times the size of a double car garage.
A guest room, which had a fireplace, was attached to the shop.
There was also another room attached to the guest room.
The price tag of the home is $389,000.

OK enough dreaming about the home!

These are the few things I left with.

A round wood frame,
2 more nests with birds (why oh why can't I pass these up!!??),
2 vintage Japan Bird Clip-on ornaments.
One bird is in good condition the is not.

And an embroidered Souvenir Hankie from Alaska
Total $6.

We hit a Country Yard Sale on the way home and found
a sweet Lambie, planter and a couple topiary in need of some help.

And the pis de resistance...

this sweet chandelier!
My first ever Chandelier find :)

I'm pretty sure it's some type of iron, either cast or wrought
and very dirty.

At first I thought I'd sell it, but....

I've taken a shine to it, even with it's lilac color.
So it will be staying.
A good winter project to rewire and
add a chain for the Gazebo next Summer.

It's Starting to get Spooky......

We've been adding to our Halloween Decor over the last few days.
More will be added, but the scariest not until Halloween Day...got to keep the neighborhood kiddos guessing ;)

Moma Cat supervises as Melissa decides
where to place the headstones and Mummy.

Everything looks better at night, of course ;)

Wish I had a wider front "porch" so I would have room for decorations.

We were out gallivanting around the other day and happened to stop by Target where the had the neatest "Porch Pot".
A black urn with black sticks decorated with orange mini lights.
I fell in love with it but not the price...$29.99!

Didn't take a photo in the store and this is the best I could find on the net.
I know it's not very good.

Anyway I decided I could make it way cheaper.

I have a urn that stays by the front door
which I change out for the seasons.
And I have plenty of sticks in the backyard ,
black paint ~ check,
foam for the urn ~ check
orange mini lights...nope.
So I picked up a string there for $4.99.

Came home stuffed foam into the urn,

then added the sticks.
Now, Targets just had the painted black foam exposed...
didn't care for that too much so I added some Dollar Tree moss I had
and went crazy with the black spray paint.
Threw on the lights and decided to add the
infamous Dollar Tree Black Crow
we all have.

Viola`

15 mins and $4.99 we have...

it's a little smaller than Targets and not as Professional looking,
but I love it!
And that's all that matters, right!?

We also stopped into Home Depot
and much to our surprise a

They had all their Christmas stuff out! yes, already!

I decided to take a peek (something I never do until Thanksgiving).
Well I ended up walking out with a new Christmas Tree! LOL

The one we have is quite old and really too big for the size of our living room, especially with the new furniture we got over the summer.
This one is a petite 5' tall and much narrower and....
drum roll please...

PRE-LIT!!!

Woo Hoo! I'm so excited to have a pre-lit one!
I was surprised at the price,
$34.99

Didn't think that was too bad at all.
hmmm...

maybe I'll put it up after Halloween,
just to see what it looks like in the room, of course
;)

Fertilizer Friday ~ 10/15/10

Once again we join Tootsie Time for Fertilizer Friday!

Please pop over and see what everyone is flaunting!

Tomatoes anyone??

We went from mid 70's last week into the upper 90's this week
bringing on a flush of ripe Tomatoes.

I picked these this morning to add
to the drawer full I already have in the frig!
With the cooler temps last week my mind changed gears from
canning to baking which brought on a hunt for green tomato recipes.
So, not in a canning mood, I looked for fresh Tomato recipes and found
a Fresh Tomato Cake recipe.
It's in the oven as we speak!
If it's any good I'll share the recipe ♥

You see they'll be plenty of time for the green recipes....

as there are tons more Toms out there!

Help!

Anyone?!

I had to go to the store for Cream Cheese Frosting (for the cake)
and spied little Mums on sale for $1.49

I need to get them in the ground
but for now they are keeping "The Old Geezer" company ☺☺
